The Spectacular Now (2013) Rated R

Spectacular nowA coming of age story where a young man lives life in the now and struggles with alcohol. Based on the novel of the same name by Tim Tharp. Starring Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley, Brie Larson, Kyle Chandler, Jennifer Jason Leigh

First off, I never thought that either child in this film, Sutter and Aimee, had a particular bad home life. I thought they came from a rather average home life, so their disrespect to the parents made me quite angry and like teenagers in general shows how ungrown up they truly are. Sutter, the young man, who struggles with alcohol, was to me the most realistic part of the film. I think people would find it interesting the number of high schoolers struggling with alcohol. None this makes this a bad film. In fact this is fairly typical of teen life but I did feel a little let down at the end. I don’t know how they could have ended it but I just feel that with everything going on and Sutter realizing he needs to change just didn’t make impression of the film to be complete. It was almost open-ended. This is one of the best coming of age films.
