A chronicle of Nelson Mandela’s life from his childhood in a rural village through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa. Based on the book by Nelson Mandela. Starring Idris Elba, Naomie Harris, Tony Kgoroge
This film is a fast paced run through of Mandela’s life. It didn’t go into the politics’ of South Africa or even explained why Mandela became involved in politics’. If this film was to make me sympathize with Mandela, it failed. It didn’t give me any understanding of Mandela. It made me dislike him. I kept thinking all the way through that want he really wanted was another dictatorship. Even if he didn’t want violence he still allowed violence which made me dislike him all the more. Why would you say you want peace but then allow your people to fight and die and not condone those actions. I kept thinking, he didn’t want to partnership with the whites he wanted to govern over them not as equals but as another dictatorship over them. This is what I got out of this film. He’s not a great man but another person who wanted to become a dictator. I was quite surprised Mandela’s family approved of this film, I don’t think it showed him in a good light at all. This film is a pass.
