Having not read the book, I cannot speak to how the film compares, but it was definitely compelling.  Geared to a teen audience, this fly by your seat action flick has great visual effects with the maze, making for an entertaining story.

By the end of the movie, we still have no idea how the maze was created or why it exists; perhaps that is revealed in the book, or maybe it will be revealed in the sequel.  In my opinion, you do not need to read the book to enjoy this movie; it takes you on an exciting ride, even without the extra background information.

One point of difference worth mentioning:  the boys do speak English, unlike in the book, where they make up their own language.  This is worth a watch.
