Top Five (2014) Rated R

Top fiveA comedian trying to make it as a serious actor is thwarted by his reality star fiancée who wants their wedding televised. Starring Chris Rock, Rosario Dawson, J.B. Smoove, Gabrielle Union, Cedric the Entertainer

I like Chris Rock; I’ve always thought he had a good head on his shoulders. I wasn’t overly impressed by this film, though.  The movie digs into what all comedians struggle with: trying to be serious when the world only expects you to be “on.”

There is a LOT of language and nudity in this movie.  The language is something I can usually overlook, but the nudity was just too much.  I do have to give them credit for not including it arbitrarily, though; it was used with intention.

Rock plays the typecast comedian, but he seemed to struggle with the serious aspects of his character.  He plays a comedian who is going through sobriety, but in the scenes where he needs to act
drunk, Rock falls a little flat, in my opinion.  I think he was trying to play the funny drunk, but it didn’t come across convincingly.

If language and nudity don’t bother you, there are enough worthwhile elements to this film to make it worth a watch.
