Bernie (2011) Rated PG-13

bernieIn a small town, a mortician strikes up a friendship with a widow, who becomes controlling, which causes him to go to great lengths to separate himself from her. Based on the true story of the murder of Marjorie Nugent by her companion. Starring Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, Matthew McConaughey.

Brilliantly executed, this film completely defies expectation.  Black is surprisingly effective as the eccentric, do-gooder mortician, and the rest of the cast members are equally brilliant in this satirical masterpiece. The film takes us through the relationship between Nugent and her companion, Bernie Tiede, as well as the town’s supportive response to Tiede when he confesses to her murder. Somehow, this film manages to showcase both how inconceivable this was and yet how believable at the same time.  Excellent in every way, this film is a must watch.
