Francis Ford Coppola used old film techniques for his special effects, trying to keep with the time period of the story. There were no computer-generated effects. The film brilliantly brings Bram Stoker’s story to life and gives Dracula a heart. It won several awards including Oscars for best costume design, makeup, and effects. The only place critics seemed less than impressed was with the acting, particularly Reeves performance. Although his English accent wasn’t the best, I didn’t think it detracted from the film, and I also think he gave a satisfactory performance as the young man who wanted to make a good impression on his boss, only to be upstaged by the supernatural abilities of Dracula. It was Ryder’s performance that felt overdone to me, but even with its faults, this is still a compelling film and worth a watch.
