I rather enjoyed this version of Jane Eyre. It is not as dark as other versions, and by dark, I mean the lighting, not the story. The highlight of this version is how deep they go into Jane’s history rather than just the romance between Eyre and Rochester. The casting is also brilliant, with Welles as Rochester and Fontaine as Eyre. The chemistry between them was excellent. The lighting on this film is well done; in most of the versions I’ve watched, the lighting is so dark that you can’t see the actors, let alone understand the story. Here we have great contrast as the characters go from darkness into the light. I’ve never been a fan of Bronte, but this adaptation is worth a watch.
