Secret of Giving (1999) Rated PG

A single mother struggles to raise her son and keep her ranch during the Christmas season. Based on the book Christmas in Calico by Jack Curtis. Starring  Reba McEntire, Thomas Ian Griffith, and Ronny Cox.

This made for TV movie is unusual for the holiday season. We have a single mother at the turn of the century who’s desperately trying to save her ranch and take care of her son. Everyone is sympathetic but unable to help. It’s an emotional film, and Reba delivers an amazing performance as a mother on her losing end. At times the film can be sententious and uncommonly multicultural for the time period – not that these are bad things, they’re just a little overpowering for a sentimental Christmas film. This film is worth a watch.
