The film follows Christopher Columbus’ discovery of the Americas and the effect this has on the indigenous people. Starring Gérard Depardieu, Armand Assante, and Sigourney Weaver.
There are a lot of issues with this film. While they worked with the facts of Columbus’ discovery, they leave a lot out. Granted, they can’t fit Columbus’ full life inside a two-hour film. It’s obvious that there are gaps in the story. Even so, it’s a beautifully shot film with a wonderful telling of his landing. Depardieu did his best to be Italian, but the French does come through. That doesn’t bother me much, as any accent is better for a foreign character. The film tries not to paint Columbus in any light, whether good or bad. Thus, the film is very lukewarm, and not worth a watch.
