Till the Clouds Roll By (1946) Rated NR

Till the Clouds roll byThe biography of Jerome Kern, the writer of many Broadway musicals. Starring June Allyson, Lucille Bremer, Judy Garland, Lena Horne, Van Johnson, Tony Martin, Robert Walker

As the lover of many of Kern’s musical scores- most notably Show Boat-I had high hopes for this biographical musical about the man himself.  It’s jam-packed with stars from the 40’s: Esther Williams, June Allyson, Judy Garland, Lena Horne, Van Johnson, Frank Sinatra; the list goes on and on.

Although I did enjoy the sampler of songs from his many productions,  it seems to be all this film had to offer.  What little of Kern’s real life story is presented takes a backseat to the song and dance routines scattered throughout the film.  I certainly don’t mind the music, but I had expected to learn more about the man behind it.

As I understand it, MGM faced restrictions in what they could share, due to estate issues upon Kern’s death in pre-production.  I guess this is all they had to offer.   For me, it’s a miss.
