As the lover of many of Kern’s musical scores- most notably Show Boat-I had high hopes for this biographical musical about the man himself. It’s jam-packed with stars from the 40’s: Esther Williams, June Allyson, Judy Garland, Lena Horne, Van Johnson, Frank Sinatra; the list goes on and on.
Although I did enjoy the sampler of songs from his many productions, it seems to be all this film had to offer. What little of Kern’s real life story is presented takes a backseat to the song and dance routines scattered throughout the film. I certainly don’t mind the music, but I had expected to learn more about the man behind it.
As I understand it, MGM faced restrictions in what they could share, due to estate issues upon Kern’s death in pre-production. I guess this is all they had to offer. For me, it’s a miss.
