A Matador’s Mistress (2008) Rated UR

A Matador's MistressManolete visits his mother and remembers his life. Starring Adrien Brody, Penélope Cruz, Santiago Segura, Ann Mitchell, Juan Echanove.

This film is based on the life of Manuel Laureano Rodríguez Sánchez, a bullfighter in Spain. The film tells of the love story between Manuel and actress Lupe Sino before his death. This film was very problematic, in my opinion. First, they never shot any scenes with real bulls, although they did include actual footage of Manolete in the bull ring. Second, I struggled with the veracity of this depiction of Manolete’s life. Perhaps, that was due to the sporadic way it was presented.  It spans so many aspects, from his celebrity to his relationships to his bullfighting, but without any depth of insight. I wish they had done better a better job with his story. This film isn’t worth a watch.
