Thirteen (2016) Rated TV-MA

Thirteen years after her abduction, Ivy Moxam steps out of the house she has been held captive in since she was 13 years old. Starring  Jodie Comer, Natasha Little, Stuart Graham, Richard Rankin, Valene Kane, Joe Layton, Katherine Rose Morley, Eleanor Wyld, Aneurin Barnard, Kemi-Bo Jacobs, Mark Flitton, Peter McDonald, Melina Matthews, Nicola Stuart-Hill.

I was intrigued by the premise of this miniseries, but it failed to deliver.  The slow pace and outlandish storylines really detracted from its potential as a thriller.  This is not one of BBC’s best; it is a pass.

I did not know what to expect, but Jody being in it got me to look. I did enjoy it a lot, thought her performance was finely nuanced, and empathetic, showing how Ivy was initially very much as she was at 13 and dealing with a familiar, but new world. Another standout was Valene Kane as the lead DDs. Another good job before doing a splendid job in The Fall as well. Her partners obsession with Ivy was over done in my opinion. I thought the end was a bit rushed, but I’m used to more American style police dramas and a more thorough, finished ending. BUT, I think that is my issue and I liked how British dramas seem to let you discover, flesh it out instead of handing the events, or important clues to you. Now we know Ms Comer is a fantastic performer, and I look forward to her career.

I agree completely, British dramas do let you discover the events rather than telling you what is going to happen. I’m glad you enjoyed it, even though it was too slow of a pace for me.

Thanks Laurarachel4 : Appreciate the reply. Now that I have some streaming services I can find SOME British shows. I know what you mean on the pace (at times), but I stuck with it because of the performances, AND I am an “anglophile” , enjoying any looks at life in Britain. I live in North Carolina, USA. Heritage is from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England. Be well !! deb
