Beverly Lewis’ The Shunning (2011) Rated UR

Katie Lapp has always thought there was something different about her, and when an “Englisher” comes into Katie’s Amish community looking for the daughter she put up for adoption, her life changes. Based on the novel of the same title by Beverly Lewis. Starring Sherry Stringfield, Sarah Maine, Willie Stratford, Danielle Panabaker.

There are no special bells or whistles in this Hallmark film; nothing spectacular or sensational happens. It’s just a well-told, coming of age story about an Amish girl who discovers she wasn’t born into the Amish world. The conflict she faces upon her discovery is a universal one of belonging. In its own quiet way, this film tells a great story, and it is worth a watch.
