Boyhood (2014) Rated R

Boyhood follows the life of Mason from early adolescent to college age. Starring Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, and Elijah Smith.

This film is experimental in the way it shows a character change as time goes by. It’s filmed over 12 years as we see each of the characters age in real-time. What this film lacks is a great story about a boy who struggles with growing up. The story isn’t as cohesive as it could be. It jumps through time as we watch the young boy struggle with each year. Nothing good seems to come from these characters. The boy becomes a slacker, the father finally grows up, and the mother never makes any good choices. The only redeeming part of the film is they did a wonderful job at filming seamlessly over 12 years. That’s the only reason the film is worth a watch.
