If/Then (Theater)

If/Then tells the story of 38-year-old Elizabeth, who moves to New York City to start a fresh life. The story tells it as she decides which decision to make, IF she makes a decision, THEN what happens. Starring Idina Menzel, LaChanze, Anthony Rapp, and James Snyder.

I got to see this Broadway production at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It’s an interesting story as we watch Elizabeth make lots of different decisions in her life. Some are good decisions, others – not so good. In the end, she makes the one that is best for her. Idina Menzel is the perfect Elizabeth. She brings that character to life with all its twists and turns. The main problem is that there are lots of times that you, as the audience, have a hard time telling which of the stories we’re following. The story jumps around so much because each decision has a consequence that we must contend with. The story gets quite sticky. The songs are enjoyable to listen to; they’re songs that you would want to listen to over and over again. It’s a musical that’s worth a watch.
