The Real O’Neals (ABC) Rated TV-PG

A family’s bond is strengthened when one of them comes out as gay. Starring Martha Plimpton, Jay R. Ferguson, and Noah Galvin.

This show starts out as a traditional sitcom, but everyone seems to have problems. I know sitcoms are supposed to be littered with problems, but these problems are not the one-episode kind of problems. The parents are going through a divorce, they have a child that’s anorexia, one’s gay, and one is questioning their Catholic beliefs. Everything seems to be a problem, and nothing seems to be fixed. They just continue to wallow in the issues at hand. What’s more frustrating is the show tends to have the family portraying good family values on the outside – but inside, they are as dysfunctional as a family can get. It’s that issue I have the biggest problem with. It would be more realistic that they are a family trying to have good family values rather than faking them. I wouldn’t want to watch this show again, making it not worth a watch.
