The Voices (2014) Rated R

A guy pursues his office crush with the help of his talking pets. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Gemma Arterton, and Anna Kendrick.

The film tries to toe the line as a black comedy, but it isn’t very funny. Reynolds plays the guy with the crush, who has mental illness where he hears talking animals and has hallucinations. He’s not that scary until the end. The film could go different ways; it could be scarier, more of horror film, or weirder. Overall, the film struggles to make a connection but might give an insight to a serial killer’s mindset. The movie really can’t make up its mind on what it would like to be. The tone changes midway through from black comedy and doesn’t come back to it. It’s a film that’s interesting but not worth a watch.
