Fun Mom Dinner (2017) Rated R

Four moms decide to have a fun mom dinner. Starring Rob Huebel, Caleb Paddock, and Matthew Paddock.

At first glance this film is looks like one of the fun mom films that allows the women to get out and enjoy themselves. They do get out and have fun, but it also involves drugs, which doesn’t end well. There are moments of humor, but mostly I thought how un-mom-like these characters are. Granted, I think that’s what they were going for. The pacing wasn’t bad, but there were scenes that dragged. While I had higher expectations with this film, it’s a more adult version of Mom’s Night Out. Thus, it’s not worth the watch.

D.C. Cab (1983) Rated R

A group of streetwise cabbies work for a decrepit taxicab company. Starring Max Gail, Adam Baldwin, and Mr. T.

I feel that this film didn’t know which way to go. It has crude humor mixed with nudity, which, to me, is pointless. In fact, the whole film is rather pointless. It’s hard to figure out the storyline. It starts great by following one line, but then you run into the crazies: both cabbies and passengers. There are also plots that go no where. However, it is fun watching young actors that you know and love in the start of their careers. Each has an interesting character; some you love, and others you hate. It’s a film that is fun to watch, but not worth it.

Elvis ’56 (1987) Rated NR

A documentary of the year Elvis went from a singer to a world famous superstar in 1956. Starring Levon Helm, Elvis Presley, and Steve Allen.

This documentary takes us through the life of Elvis as he goes from a little-known singer to a world famous star. It focuses on clips of his life from being in the studio to on the stage and the talk shows. It is interesting to see the transformation that happens during the year as it was documented on video. The backdrop is the music that he recorded during that year, while the story is told with a voiceover from Helm and the original video tapes. It’s a documentary worth the watch.

Daddy’s Home 2 (2017) Rated PG-13

Now that the blended family has learned to work together, they add in the grandfathers this Christmas. Starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, and Mel Gibson.

I really enjoy the premise of these films with the mix of a blended family and working together for the good of the children. I appreciate the concept of how not to be hateful or angry at the exes but rather focusing on how to be the bigger person and take care of the kids. This sequel brings in the grandfathers and their beliefs on raising children. What makes this film just as wonderful as the first, and maybe even better, is the addition of Gibson and John Lithgow as the grandfathers. Both bring comedy to the sequel. This film is worth the watch.

Army Wives (Lifetime) Rated TV-14

Four women and a man share in their love/hate relationship of having a spouse in the Army. Starring Brian McNamara, Wendy Davis, and Catherine Bell.

This show has both the realness of military life and at the same time has very blatant inaccuracies. It’s warm and funny with characters that you can relate to and come to love. It’s brilliantly written, showing the military in a better light than what is normally presented on screen. It’s not the most perfect institution, but they do strive to make the world a better place by doing the job they were trained to do. As a military brat, I will say I enjoyed the show for what it was, the good, bad and the ugly. It’s worth the watch.

Dangerous Game: The Legacy Murders (2022) Rated R

A family reunion at a secluded mansion leaves the guests trapped inside to play the a game. Starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Will Sasso, and Jon Voight.

This film reminds me of Saw. It tries to recreate the style of HH Holmes’ Murder Castle as the theme of this film. While it’s written well and the acting isn’t so bad, I’m a little over Meyers’ overacting. He tends to overstate his lines. The  film also doesn’t hide anything. Everything that is said is just as it is. I was also surprised that the person behind the scenes comes out every once in a while and doesn’t stay hidden; that doesn’t make much sense. Most of the movie doesn’t provide much on the reasons behind the characters amd their actions. Overall, it doesn’t have a good concept to differentiate it from other similar films. Thus, the film is not worth the watch.

Auschwitz: Inside the Nazi State (2005) Rated NR

A miniseries looks at the final solution of the Nazi reign, focusing on the infamous Auschwitz. Starring Samuel West, Linda Hunt, and Gert Heidenreich.

This documentary goes from the opening of Auschwitz to the liberation of it in 1945. We look at the reasons for the concentration camps with interviews of survivors and reenactments. These interviews are not for the faint of heart. They dive into the darkest time in human history as they talk to the survivors and their guards. The show also includes clips from the Nuremberg trials. The documentary does a wonderful job looking at the life inside the concentration camps but doesn’t always give an explanation to the reason behind some of the decisions. I don’t think there is really any explanation to why humans do some of the things they do; you can only surmise. This series is worth the watch.
