The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special (2017) Rated TV-PG

Two children are visited by David S. Pumpkins, who take them on a journey learning about Halloween while finding the stolen candy. Starring Tom Hanks, Peter Dinklage, and Bobby Moynihan.

This special is the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen. At first, I’m questioning if this is even viewable for children. It’s not bad for children per the language, but I question the historic or fantasy tellings of the holiday as kid content. While the comedy isn’t the best, nor is the animation, it does have great actors. Although, the characters are not intriguing enough to want to earn a rewatch. This special is not worth the watch.

My Dinner with Hervé (2018) Rated TV-MA

An interview between a journalist and Hervé Villechaize, an actor immortalized in the 1977 TV series, Fantasy Island and who committed suicide days after the interview. Starring Peter Dinklage, Jamie Dornan, and Frida Munting.

This is an interesting story. While I love the concept, I would’ve liked the story if it had been more concise. However, I understand that the interview in itself was chaotic, and the writer was trying to make the film as chaotic as the interview was. As such, it’s difficult for the viewer to see the full story of who Hervé was. Dinklage was brilliant as Hervé, and Dornan as Danny Tate rather than Sacha Gervasi, who was the original interviewer, tried to be the straight man to the chaotic actor. The film needs more clarity in the storyline, making it not worth the watch.

My Pet Ate What!? (Animal Planet) Rated P12

Dr. G and son extract the items your pets eat. Starring Praneet Akilla, Eugene Gorodetsky, and Ben Gorodetsky.

I’m surprised they haven’t done a show like this before. This is both interesting and disgusting at the same time. The show is rather cool in the fact that we not only see the medical side of the job but also the behind the scenes part. Although, I think the behind the scenes are boring and the medical extraction is much more interesting. It’s especially interesting if you have pets as they do tend to eat lots of items that shouldn’t be eaten. It’s a show that is interesting, but once you’ve seen it, you don’t have to see it again. It’s not worth the watch.

Naked and Afraid: Apocalypse (Discovery) Rated NR

In a post-apocalyptic world setting, twelve survivalists both newcomers and veterans, are challenged in the terrain. Starring Miranda Adams, Waz Addy, and Teal Bulthuis.

This series is like all the other Naked and Afraid franchise installments: put naked people into the wilderness and see what they can do to survive. Most of the time, the contestants return home ill. It’s hard to defend yourself against flies and mosquitoes, but they do have measures to protect against the weather and bigger animals. The show is beyond pretending to be fake now. Either they (the show creators) made up the junk yards or they are really close to civilization.  While the beginning of the franchise is intriguing (think Survivor but naked), it’s obvious that it’s beyond that now. It’s not worth the watch.

Naming the Dead (NatGeo) Rated TV-14

The DNA project works with police to identify victims in cold cases and bring closure to the families who don’t know what happened to their loved ones. Starring Jammy Kasongo.

This is a brilliant show. It walks us through the challenges of cold cases and the new technology of DNA identification, which is used to ID thousands of victims or Does that have gone quiet over the years. Identifying the victims often helps solve a case that has goes cold as they are better at finding who could have harmed the victim before they went missing. It’s wonderful to watch the detectives continue to give cold cases their all in order to give the victims their name back. This is a show that is worth the watch.

Necaxa (FX) Rated NR

We follow Club Necaxa’s relocation to Aguascalientes. Starring Eva Longoria, Alexis Peña, and Pepe Hanan.

While, I have enjoyed Welcome to Wrexham, which is produced by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds (who also own part of the team), they have expanded with Eva and a Mexican team. This series is a far cry from Wrexham. Wrexham is based on the fans and the fandom of generations. Necaxa, on the other hand, is all about the team and its staff. There are little to no interviews with the fans. There is no heart, and it’s all business. To top it off, the show is mostly in Spanish, and while I’m used to watching films that are in another language, this show just didn’t capture my attention. It’s not worth the watch.

Nevada Wild (Animal Planet) Rated NR

The show follows Nevada wildlife and game wardens as they protect resources, laws, and emergencies. Starring Nate LaHue, Kari Huebner, and John Anderson.

I love that Animal Planet has gotten on the bandwagon of law enforcement of wildlife. It’s the best of both worlds: animals and the law. You get the humans breaking ithe rules and the animals that need rescue. While at times the law does seem absurd and can be annoying, the moments when they rescue the animals are heartwarming. The show covers all aspect of wildlife protection, and you never know what might happen. This series is worth the watch.
