A musical based on the book, Parfumerie by Miklós Laszlo. The story takes place in a Parfumerie where the co-workers unknowingly write to and fall in love with each other. It’s the first Broadway show to live stream online through BroadwayHD. Starring Laura Benanti, Zachary Levi, Jane Krakowski, Gavin Creel.
I was really excited to finally see this musical. I’ve loved the movies, The Shop Around the Corner and You’ve Got Mail, I’ve also seen the 1978 BBC TV movie of She Loves Me. I’ve loved all them, and I was pleased to see that this one lived up to the others.
Zachary Levi brings his quirky personality to the character of Georg, the man who realizes he’s been writing to his romantic co-worker whom he doesn’t get along with. Laura Benanti is charming as the romantic, intelligent woman just trying to find her love, who certainly isn’t Georg. Jane Krakowski’s acrobatic moves give me hope that there is still a chance for me. It’s a charming musical that showcases love and is well worth the watch.
A side note: As a Broadway lover and a Midwesterner, it was wonderful that this show was streamed live, and I’m hoping that more will go that route. I hear that it will be played in theaters this fall, too. I will definitely go to the theater to see it again.
