Loving (2016) Rated PG-13

lovingThe story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple, who challenged the arrest for their marriage in Virginia all the way to the Supreme Court. Starring Ruth Negga, Joel Edgerton, Will Dalton.

This is not a romantic film.  It begins with Mildred’s pregnancy and Richard’s decision to marry her.  In that time, it wasn’t unheard of for this kind of situation to arise; what makes it interesting is his decision to marry Mildred and legitimize his child.  There is no insight into why he made this decision, though.  Did he love Mildred or was he simply an honorable man?  I wish they had dug deeper into what made this couple tick, rather than focusing solely on the court battle, interesting as it is. Even without the romance, this film is still a joy and worth a watch.
