Molly’s Game (2017) Rated R

The true story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic skier who ran the world’s most exclusive high stakes poker games. Based on the book, Molly’s Game: The True Story of the 26-Year-Old Woman Behind the Most Exclusive, High-Stakes Underground Poker Game in the World, by Molly Bloom. Starring Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, and Kevin Costner.

In this film, Aaron Sorkin weaves the details of Molly Bloom’s life from her fall as an Olympic skier to the madam of high stakes poker. Jessica Chastain excels in her portrayal of Molly as a smart woman who wants more from life than what became of her Olympic career. She’s stiff and hard, but you see that it’s a response to her life experiences. Of course, the film has its little bumps such as the depiction of Bloom’s arrest, which doesn’t provide many details other than the fact she’s running underground poker games. Then you have the father/daughter relationship that drives Bloom to excel in her life, but there’s also a surprising twist. This film is worth a watch.
