The Dominican Dream (2019) Rated NR

In the 1990s, a young immigrant, Felipe Lopez, was featured in Sports Illustrated and became the poster child of the American dream. Starring Johnny Solo.

If you are a fan of basketball, this documentary on Lopez will interest you. I have never been a follower of basketball, and I’ve never heard of Lopez. The documentary, on the other hand, is more about the immigration story of Lopez and his family. They came to the U.S. to create a better life. We watch archive videos of him playing mixed with interviews of family, coaches, and teammates. Lopez is a tale of hype and struggle, but the film focuses on how much of a role model Lopez has become over the years. I struggled with this film, mostly because I couldn’t’ focus on the story. It’s a story about immigration, and at times, I really enjoyed it. I wish this were a film worth watching, but it was too boring for me. It wasn’t worth a watch.
