Genius Aretha (NatGeo) Rated TV-14

Aretha Franklin’s relationship between her father, her marriage, and her music career are depicted. Starring Cynthia Erivo, Malcolm Barrett, and Patrice Covington.

This series is touted as the best of the Genius anthology, but I hate to say it – it’s the worst. The story is all over the place; we jump back and forth through Franklin’s timeline, but it’s not cohesive. It’s poorly written. Cynthia Erivo is a brilliant actress, but I don’t feel Aretha in her performance. I never gained the understanding or became emotionally invested in this series because they never let me. Once you start to understand the story of where Franklin is, we jump through time again. Nothing is being told to – us we just get scratches. This series is not worth a watch.
