One South: Portrait of a Psych Unit (HBO) Rated TV-MA

One South is an inpatient psychiatric unit in Queens, NY, that specializes in young adults with mental conditions. Starring Jason Yan, Laura Braider, and Rachel Reich.

This show gives a real look at the struggles of the younger generation, and many struggle with ideas about suicide. They come from good homes or bad homes, and they struggle with friends or family. A lot of what they say is relatable as we all struggle with things, and it’s understandable that they have the thoughts they do. At times, even when the doctors try not to, it still happens that they treat the patient as a number. They forget that each patient is a person with their own thoughts and feelings. So, trying to come up with treatment is difficult because patients have variable reactions and feelings, and you might not get the response you were hoping for. While I believe some of them need help with developing healthy ways to respond to life’s challenges, I wonder if giving them a different environment might help. This is a show worth watching to understand a little more about mental health conditions.
