The Red Pony (1973) Rated UR

A young farm boy who struggles with his father gets attached to a red pony. Based on the novel by John Steinbeck.  Starring Henry Fonda, Maureen O’Hara, and Ben Johnson.

I think this is a fine representation of Steinbeck’s novel. The acting is brilliant with Fonda as the father and O’Hara as the mother. The other actor, a young Clint Howard, is brilliant as the boy who struggles in his relationship with his father. The acting is great, but the film, overall, is not so brilliant. The story just doesn’t give me the feels toward the boy’s plight, but it does create some emotion around the misunderstanding between the boy and his father. It’s also emotional when it comes to the loss of the pony. Although, the final scene of the boy and the father fighting over the work horse and foul just made me angry rather than upset. Of course, with us living in the twenty-first century and knowing there are better options, it just doesn’t create the right feelings. This film is not worth the watch.

The Ranger, the Cook and a Hole in the Sky (1995) Rated PG

In 1919, a seventeen-year-old boy works for the forest service and learns a few lessons about life. Starring Sam Elliott, Jerry O’Connell, and Ricky Jay.

This is supposed to be a coming-of-age film, but really it’s a story that lacks direction. The story doesn’t have much to support the characters’ need to grow up. There aren’t many opportunities that would make someone change who they are, and it doesn’t seem like there is any change by the end of the film. It just really doesn’t have a good plot to build on, especially with the conflict between the boy and the cook – there aren’t any sparks there. For the most part, the film is enjoyable to watch for the named actors, but for an afternoon to escape reality, this is not it. This film is not worth the watch.

Tornado and the Kalahari Horse Whisperer (2009) Rated NR

A young man struggling with life hires a horse whisperer to help train his troubled horse. Based on a true story.  Starring Danny Keogh, Quentin Krog, and LeĆ”n van den Bergh.

The film doesn’t have the best script. It’s a typical story about the relationship between horse and owner. The pacing is rather slow as we try to learn more about each of the characters. Although, it doesn’t give us much in the way of character depth. It’s a film that has Christian morals, and the story is one that families would enjoy. I would have liked to enjoy it, but I struggled with both the poor script and acting. Unfortunately, it’s one that is not worth the watch.

The Legend of 5 Mile Cave (2019) Rated TV-PG

A drifter  befriends a boy with tales of the wild west, when a lawman comes to find some long lost gold. Starring Adam Baldwin, Jeremy Sumpter, and Jill Wagner.

This is a great family film. It’s predictable  but the actors are brilliant in it. We see the two timelines: the wild west with Shooter Green, the fastest gunman, and the single mother and son about to lose their farm. The  film is clean with great morals about family and truth. This is a film that families will enjoy. The pacing is slow but not so bad that you struggle with the story. It’s not a cheesy film, which a lot of these films are.  It’s worth the watch.

The Rare Breed (1966) Rated NR

An English woman and her daughter enlist a cowboy to help get their bull to mate with their longhorns. Starring James Stewart, Maureen O’Hara, and Brian Keith.

This is different than the usual westerns. However, the film has the quintessential western themes; Stewart plays a middle-aged cowboy who agrees to two different deals. It’s an offbeat western, but the story isn’t very satisfying. The characters are hard – too hard to really care about them and their problems. Although, both Stewart and O’Hara are still a joy to watch. Then you have the wonderful cinematography of the land with the beautiful music from John Williams. It’s a film that has potential but really lacks in pulling the audience in. This film is not worth the watch.
