The New Guy (2002) Rated PG-13

A high school nerd who gets expelled becomes the cool guy at his new school. Starring DJ Qualls, Eliza Dushku, and Zooey Deschanel.

This story is something we always see in teen-angst films: a makeover for the unpopular teen. Even if it’s a story we’ve seen before, sometimes the film can still delight with a good script and actors. This film has the good actors, but it doesn’t have a good script. It’s not funny as a comedy; the scenarios are so far fetched and unrealistic that they don’t make sense.  The point of this film is nonexistent, but that doesn’t make it good. It’s not worth the watch.

Dreamworks How to Train Your Dragon Legends (Netflix) Rated UR

This series has the gang learning about the different dragons, and then they go hunting for the Boneknapper Dragon. Starring America Ferrera, Jay Baruchel, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

This show is interesting for kids that love the film series or dragons in particular. The show talks about each individual dragon, the pros and cons and what makes each unique from other dragons. It’s interesting but not very entertaining. There really isn’t a story to the series other than the fact that they finally go looking for the Boneknapper, but that really isn’t much of a story. This is not worth the watch.

The Mist (Spike) Rated TV-14

A mist rolls into a small town and envelopes it with creatures that attack the residents, affecting both the mentality and sanity of the residents. Based on the book by Stephen King. Starring Morgan Spector, Alyssa Sutherland, and Gus Birney.

This show just lacks what Stephen King tries to portray in his books. There isn’t much depth the to characters the monster is the environment – definitely a left television show. The environment is rising up to attack humanity. The performances aren’t bad, but the book wasn’t made to be a TV show; it lacks the suspense that the films have. This show is a poor translation of the book, making it not worth the watch.

Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives (2017) Rated NR

A look at the life of music producer Clive Davis. Starring Clive Davis, Simon Cowell, and Jimmy Iovine.

It’s no doubt that Clive Davis has an ear for good music. Of course, the documentary revolves around his professional life and not so much his personal life. The film focuses on his highs and brushes over his lows in the business. Granted, he does talk a little about his personal life, but it’s brief. Then you have his most famous protege, Whitney Houston, which takes up a good chuck of the film. Overall, it’s a good overview of his professional life and successes. It’s worth the watch just to see how he influenced the music scene.

The Mist (2007) Rated R

A storm brings in a group of hungry creatures that are fighting to feed on the citizens in a small town. Based on the book by Stephen King.  Starring Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, and Laurie Holden.

Frank Darabont, the screenwriter for this Stephen King book, often does a good job at bringing King’s book to life. This is no exception. Although, The Mist is not the most popular of King’s books. While the monster rages outside, there is a focus on the bad monster inside that takes the form of a religious zealot. While I get that they need different archetypes, the religious zealot doesn’t always come off as interesting or good, which is the character that Harden plays. While she has good points, she also goes crazy in her thought process. The caricatures of the story aren’t that annoying and the pacing isn’t bad for a horror film. Thus, the film is worth the watch.
