Windy City Rehab: Alison’s Dream Home (HGTV) Rated NR

Alison Victoria is changing her office building into her private home. Starring Alison Victoria, Ari Smejkal, and Kristy Yarbrough.

This is a big undertaking to change a building from an office into a 6,700-square feet home. I don’t typically watch Victoria’s shows,  but this one intrigued me. She does have an eye for high-end items. We also learn that she is rich. Now, when she  is looking at the cost of this renovation and how much it will be, she is worried about the cost – but what else does she have? Other homes all over the U.S. that she can sell. She also has money to fly to Europe to find items for her home. Nobody does that in the real world. Granted, the show if probably paying for all of that. Having the show also gives her some credit toward the renovation. As she is wanting to do this, and already getting rid of her other homes, is who would purchase this home when she no longer wants it? It would be mostly unsellable after the fact. However, this show is interesting and is still worth the watch.

Through the Wormhole (Discovery) Rated TV-PG

Morgan Freeman questions the world that makes our existence. Starring Morgan Freeman, Sean Carroll, and Michio Kaku.

There is just something about Morgan Freeman’s voice. He asks the questions we all have about the universe. His voice has the same air of curiousity that we have and doesn’t have a condescending tone to suggest that he knows best. The show also doesnt’ really take the position that “this is fact” but rather that this could be the answer to the question. Other shows that look at similar topics should be neutral like this, knowing that there is more out there than meets the eye. This series is worth the watch.

You Had Me at Aloha (2021) Rated TV-G

When a producer and potential show host banter on screen, the TV network makes them co-hosts in Hawaii. Starring Pascale Hutton, Kavan Smith, and Jennifer Aspen.

This is a typical Hallmark movie. It helps that Hutton and Smith have had years to hone the chemistry and warmth. Hutton also was able to lose the character Rosemary Coulter from When Calls the Heart. It’s  a cute romantic comedy that leans on a more realistic version of falling for each other. It’s written as well as can be for a traditional Hallmark romance without many plot holes. It also includes a complication that could keeps them from going off into the sunset. It’s a smart film that is just fun to watch. It’s worth the watch.

Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge (HGTV) Rated NR

Eight teams from HGTV series compete to create a Barbie Dreamhouse. Starring Ashley Graham, Antonia Lofaso, and Egypt Sherrod.

Thanks to the Barbie movie this year, we get a “design your Barbie Dreamhouse” edition of home design. While some of these teams are interesting and fun to watch, others not so much. Each episode features two teams competing against each other with two rooms to a house. Each team has a decade of Barbie to use as inspiration and they must have a mobile element to their rooms. Each team that wins an episode is voted on in the finale by fans to win the cash prize. This is like any other design show, but if you love Barbie, it is interesting to see them recreate a Dreamhouse. This series is worth the watch.

The Son (AMC) Rated TV-14

A multigenerational family tells the story of America’s birth through the eyes of an oil empire. Starring Pierce Brosnan, Jacob Lofland, and Henry Garrett.

AMC has been cranking out great series the last for years. They are wonderful in their storytelling. Although, I think this series is one that oversteps the bounds. It’s a story that crosses generations, but the characters aren’t intriguing enough nor do they make you care about their plight in life. It’s like a precursor to Yellowstone, which is written better and separates the generations rather than telling the whole story. Brosnan was unrecognizable and made his character fascinating, but this show is not worth watching.
