Burlesque (2010) Rated PG-13

burlesqueA small town girl moves to Los Angeles and gets a job in a burlesque dance club. Starring Cher, Christina Aguilera, Eric Dane, Julianne Hough, Alan Cumming, Peter Gallagher, Kristen Bell, Stanley Tucci, Dianna Agron

I struggled with whether I liked this film or not.  Although the storyline was adequate, I felt the characters were lacking and the relationships weren’t fully developed.  For example, why does Jack’s fiancée keep showing up?  He says it’s over; she says it’s not.  The relationship is never officially terminated; we are expected to know it is over when Jack tells Ali for the umpteenth time that it is, and she finally believes him.  Why now?  Who knows.  I, for one, don’t trust him.  I think there is more to the story that is never explored, to the film’s detriment.

Or, take Marcus; is he supposed to be the good guy, the bad guy, or just the wrong guy?  The writers never took the time to flesh out the characters; they have no back story to help us connect to them, causing the movie to fall flat.  As it is a well-covered theme- small town girl tries to make it in the big city- I think there are a number of better options, namely Coyote Ugly.  This one is a pass for me.
