Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (2015) Rated NR

Jonathan Strange and Mr. NorrellBased on the best-selling novel from Susanna Clarke, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. Magic is long-lost in England until Mr. Norrell comes out to play, and Jonathan Strange, a novice with magic, begin a battle of the minds. Starring Bertie Carvel, Eddie Marsan, Marc Warren, Charlotte Riley, Alice Englert, Samuel West, Enzo Cilenti, Paul Kaye, Edward Hogg, Ariyon Bakare, Vincent Franklin, John Heffernan, Brian Pettifer

At first, I was looking forward to an interesting story of  the magic of illusion, but this film dabbled more in witchcraft than the art of illusion.  I haven’t read the book, so I cannot comment on the series’ similarity to it, but, in watching the series, I couldn’t see anything that would have made the book as compelling as people have indicated it to be.

What this miniseries does have is the high quality cinematography and acting characteristic of BBC programming.  If you have read the book, you may find this series worthwhile, but for me, it was a miss.
