Ben-Hur (2016) Rated PG-13

ben-hur-2016Ben-Hur is a wealthy man who is falsely accused of a crime. He returns home to seek revenge but finds redemption. Starring Jack Huston, Toby Kebbell, Rodrigo Santoro.

I’m not really a fan of remakes and, although this film does capture the essence of the original, it can’t compete with it. This film featured more takes of Jesus, played nicely by Rodrigo Santoro, who only seemed to appear to quote the Bible during Ben Hur’s major times of struggle.  This was an inaccurate portrayal of Jesus and seemed unnecessary.  What this film does excel at is the action whether working in the galley or racing chariots around the Coliseum, it is all very exciting.  This film does condense the 1959 version, so it’s not as long. And, somehow, they manage to make the chariot race even more brutal than the 1959 version, which was considered one of the bloodiest scenes in film.  Overall, I don’t think you’ll be missing anything if you skip this film, it’s a pass.
