The Light Between Oceans (2016) Rated PG-13

light-between-the-oceansA lighthouse keeper and his wife find a baby and choose to raise it as their own. Based on the book by M.L. Stedman. Starring Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Rachel Weisz.

I really wanted to like this film. Both visually mesmerizing and excellently acted, it was just too long, as artistic films can be prone to. More than that, though, I was disappointed in Vikander’s character: she had no backbone or sense of right and wrong, which disturbed me deeply (as I suppose it was meant to do).  She failed to see how her decision would affect others involved and only looked to her own interests.  It made watching the movie (and I’m sure, reading the book) very difficult.  She is no heroine, and both her actions and the inordinate length of the film make it a pass.
