We Own the Night (2007) Rated R

Two brothers on opposite sides of the law come together to take down Russian Mafia hitmen. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Eva Mendes, and Danny Hoch.

This film is a great character-driven thriller, as two brothers divided by the law come together to take down Russian Mafia hitmen. It’s not the best script, but it is a fascinating watch. It’s not original in the concept, but Phoenix, Mendes, Mark Wahlberg, and Robert Duvall perform brilliantly. The pacing of the film is perfect, and the suspense during the car chase and wheat fields make you hold your breath. I almost thought this film wasn’t worth a watch because of its opening scene – it’s a sex scene with Mendes and Phoenix. It doesn’t need to be there; it doesn’t set up the characters or plot. It’s just there to pull you in. This is a film that is worth a watch.
