The Immigrant (2013) Rated R

In 1921, an immigrant woman is tricked into a life of burlesque in order to rescue her sister from Ellis Island. Starring Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix, and Jeremy Renner.

This film is stunning and brilliantly written. Cotillard plays the immigrant who seems to have the worst luck. She and her sister are on their way to America for a better life, but instead, she stumbles upon a man who is set out to help her. The performances of Cotillard and Phoenix are just amazing. The film unfolds the story of what brought these two characters together; what it doesn’t tell us is the background to these characters. The writing is so good that you don’t know who is good and who is bad. Yet each character has a past that isn’t pretty. This film is worth a watch.
