The abolitionist John Brown takes an enslaved boy as a member of his family, who becomes a witness at the raid of Harpers’ Ferry. Based on the book by James McBride. Starring Ethan Hawke, Joshua Caleb Johnson, and Beau Knapp.
This is a historically fictional story. John Brown’s story is told through the eyes of a young slave boy, who happens to become a member of John Brown’s family and crew. John Brown was a radical. I think the story hit the nail on the head about John Brown, but I’m not sure that it was able to hold the focus of the story when we followed a young boy around and the focus is mostly on him. I think, historically, the show is brilliant, but I struggle with the emotional connection to the story. It’s lacking and makes it not worth a watch.
