A butler who sacrifices everything for his employer realizes too late that his loyalty was misguided. Starring John Haycraft, Christopher Reeve, and Anthony Hopkins.
This film starts in the 1950s when the house that Mr. Stevens, the butler, has worked all his life in is up for sale. The new owner keeps Stevens on staff as we bounce back to the 1930s, where the former owner has Nazi views and tries to get Stevens to announce his views. As we jump between timelines, it is somewhat of a struggle to follow. To the heart of the romance between Hopkins and Emma Thompson, it was hard to see that blossom due to Hopkins’ refusal to show any emotion. This film has terrific performances and the story is good, making it worth a watch.
