The Stratton Story (1949) Rated NR

A major league pitcher loses his leg in a hunting accident but wants to leave the league on his terms. Starring James Stewart, June Allyson,  and Frank Morgan.

This film is based on the true story of Monty Stratton, who on his rise in the major league has a hunting accident and loses his leg, causing him to try for a comeback. The brilliant Stewart and Allyson portray the married couple as they overcome the obstacle of starting over. The story isn’t about baseball but the relationship between the couple as they fall in love and get married. The film has great pacing but slows as he struggles with the loss of his leg. However, his comeback is worth the wait. The supporting roles of Morgan and Agnes Moorehead give weight to the story. It’s a beautifully directed film and story, making it worth a watch.
