Young Guns II (1990) Rated PG-13

Billy the Kid and his band head to Mexico while being followed by Sheriff Pat Garrett, which comes to a face off at the border. Starring Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, and Lou Diamond Phillips.

This a sequel to the first film, Young Guns. The film catapults the young Hollywood actors into fame. The first film is brilliantly written as it tells the story of the young outlaw gangs of the old west. The series brings the new young actors and the historical aspect of outlaw life to the screen. It’s a romanticizing of their life, but it also gives us a glimpse at what made them outlaws. The first film is great, but this one is lacking on a number of levels – one is the writing. While the first film is brilliant, this one just doesn’t make sense as a sequel; there was no need to make this film. It tries to tackle the legend of Billy the Kid, but it fails miserably. If the first film lacked in historical accuracy, the second one is even worse. The movie doesn’t show us how Billy the Kid survived, just that he did. This film should not have been made, and it definitely isn’t needed. It’s not worth the watch.

Agatha Christie: Lucy Worsley on the Mystery Queen (PBS) Rated NR

Lucy Worsley walks through the life of Agatha Christie, finding out how she became the writer she was and the mysteries that surround her life. Starring  Lucy Worsley, Elena Pischikova, and Edgar Jones.

This series focuses on three areas of Agatha Christie’s life. It starts with her childhood, then moves to the mysterious disappearance of Christie in 1928 and the final few years of her life. Worsley also knows how to tell a story, and this she does brilliantly as she moves from one timeframe to another. She gives us the great stories that were Christie’s best mysteries. This miniseries is a wonderful docuseries on the life of Christie and her books that were famous. This is worth the watch.

Will (TNT) Rated TV-MA

A reinvented life of William Shakespeare when he comes to London to make a name for himself as a playwright. Starring Laurie Davidson, Olivia DeJonge, and Ewen Bremner.

I was looking forward to this series. I’ve never been a Shakespeare fan, but I thought I might enjoy a fictional tale of his life. While I’m sure theatre life during the time may have been that barbaric, the show revolves around the graphic and immoral lifestyles of the those involved in it. It was a display of disgusting and blatant behaviors. They could’ve made it more cinematic by following the idea that less is more. That would have created more intrigue in the show. Then  you wouldn’t have just as much trouble understanding the storyline. As it was, I couldn’t care less about the characters or even the story they were trying to tell. It didn’t help that they tried to make the show updated with their characters. Nothing brought Will Shakespeare to life. It just made a joke and mockery of his stories and life. Granted, Shakespeare is a figure of mystique because there is not much on his life other than his plays. This show is so bad that I wouldn’t watch it again. It’s not worth the watch the first time around.

After Midnight (CBS) Rated NR

A midnight comedy game show. Starring Taylor Tomlinson, Paul F. Tompkins, and Kurt Braunohler.

This show makes no sense. You have a host with three comedians that answer questions. The host determines how good the answers are and awards points based on his opinion. Some are funny, and some are not so funny. At times, I thought the host was more fond of one comedian over another. I also get why people think this is scripted, which it may be, but I think the questions were given to the comedians before the show so they could  come up with some good bits. Most celebrities don’t go on game shows without knowing what to expect or having some sort of script. Although, in the first episode Whitney Cummings works the best with on-the-spot answers while the other two juggled with theirs. The show isn’t after midnight for any reason other than the fact that they can do adult jokes. Thus, the show is not worth the watch.

Driver from Hell (2016) Rated TV-14

Two women are terrorized by an unknown driver in a heavy-duty tow truck. Starring Anna Hutchison, Andrea Whitburn, and Jennifer Koenig.

This film is one of the worst films I have ever seen. The script is awful with how stupid everyone is, and then you have a truck that somehow catches up with a sports car. The script is so poorly written you have no idea why the girls are driving around, why one of them disappears half-way through the film, or how they are going to shake the truck. The girls just drive around in circles; the continuity team needed to work on that. The film is a total impossibility while not making much sense. I’m surprised that it was even produced. It’s not worth the watch.

A Christmas… Present (2022) Rated NR

A busy mom takes her family across the country to spend Christmas with her brother and niece as this is the first Christmas without his wife. Starring Marc Blucas, Candace Cameron Bure, and Paul Fitzgerald.

This is  definitely different from the Hallmark movies. It’s one of the first films that Candace Bure has done with the switch to Great American Family. While the storyline doesn’t do the traditional romance, it’s more geared toward the family, it still has some romance with the married couple. While  I like the film, and I hate to be a downer, but there’s one thing I just couldn’t overlook. I’m always a fan of the families being real. Thus, I love it when they mention church or going to church like normal people. It’s a part of life. What frustrates me is that we got a sermon with the film. Granted, she knew her audience wasn’t just Christians, but it was both a joy to hear and a frustration that it was a plot in the film. I do think they tried hard to blend it into the storyline, so it was more natural than other Christian films. While that is a plus for the film, it isn’t as natural as it could be. I just think they could have done better. This film is not worth the watch.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) Rated NR

A bitter couple uses alcohol and their anguish with each other and turns it toward their houseguests over an evening. Based on the play by Edward Albee. Starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and George Segal.

This is a great film. The verbal sparring between the couples is amazing. The film is amazingly raw and painful as the years of pent up emotions come surging up in one night. The film is based off a play, and it shows, but the director does a fabulous job at transforming the play into a film with extra locations. It is one of the first films to have adult themes; the film progresses as the couples deal with the pain and hurt they each caused in their marriages. Yet these couples commit to each other and live in the world of make-believe. This is a film that is worth the watch.
