Only God Forgives (2013) Rated R

only god forgivesA drug smuggler in Bangkok’s underworld is coerce by his mother to go after the killer of his brother. Starring Ryan Gosling, Kristin Scott Thomas, Vithaya Pansringarm

This film is deeply symbolic and psychological with interesting cinematography. Only God Forgives is not for the faint of heart. Although, it’s been praised for how dark it is, it still lacks story. I was at a complete lost a couple of times and at times the stylized over takes the story. If this is what  Nicolas Winding Refn has in his head, I worry about his psyche. Refn cover all the dark areas people go, sex, drugs, and murder, and not in a pretty light. The cinematography lights up the actors in this purple/gold coloring that would give some people headaches for watching too long. Which helps the story but doesn’t give it a boost. For the average movie goer, this is a miss.
