Happyish (Showtime) Rated TV-MA

Happish

A middle-aged man tries to adjust to life with a new, younger boss and the corresponding social and technological demands that make sure happiness in today’s culture. Starring Kathryn Hahn, Steve Coogan, Sawyer Shipman, Bradley Whitford, Carrie Preston

The premise of this show is intriguing, and I was so pleased to see Steve Coogan fill the void left by the untimely death of Philip Seymour Hoffman.  The role of Thom Payne seems tailor-made for Coogan, who does an excellent job.

However, I wasn’t entirely enamored with the heaviness his character brings to the show.  What could be a sharp, witty satire instead felt sluggish, dark, and morose.  I’d like to see a bit more lightness to the show to off-set the more depressing aspects of his personal and professional life.

That said, I will continue watching because I believe the show has potential to become something of a cult favorite.  Do be aware that there is a heavy dose of language and drug use that can only add to what is already a depressing life.
