Florence Foster Jenkins (2016) Rated PG-13

An heiress longs to be an opera singer but has a terrible singing voice. Based on a true story. Starring Meryl Streep, Hugh Grant, and Simon Helberg.

This film doesn’t really have a cinematic problem. The main issue I have is that the film is a comedy, but since it’s based on a true story, it isn’t funny. We have a woman who is rich enough to do as she pleases, and what she wants to do is sing. However, she has a poor singing voice. The film tells the story of her husband trying to protect her and give her the illusion that she is a great singer. She, of course, struggles with some form of mental illness. This, to me, isn’t funny. Streep is great in the role as a woman who is struggling but also wanting to do something she loves. The film doesn’t always poke fun at Jenkins, but it doesn’t avoid jokes on her behalf. Overall, it’s a pleasant film and one that gives some justice to the story of Jenkins, which makes it worthy to watch.
