Ah Wilderness! (1935) Rated NR

A story of small town America where an adolescence boy struggles with the problems of teen love. Based on the play by Eugene O’Neill. Starring Wallace Beery, Lionel Barrymore, and Aline MacMahon.

This film brings the middle of America to life with a coming of age story about the second born child of a businessman. The boy is very full of himself and has dreams of what he wants in his life. The film gives a glimpse of life, so there is a lot going on with little conclusion. The story focuses on Richard, the second born child and typical seventeen year old. He, for the most part, is full of himself – a little too full of himself as he has little regard for those around him. His attitude makes him unlikable, especially as he mistreats his girlfriend. Then, you have the romance between uncle Sid and Lily, which doesn’t take off. None of the characters earn your sympathy or make you root for them. Thus, the film is not worth the watch.
