A young American’s upper class travels take her to Italy with her mother, where they meet a young man who always knows where they will be. As the young couole falls in love, the parents struggle with the debutante’s mental capacity and the ulterior motives of the young man. Starring Olivia de Havilland, Rossano Brazzi, and Yvette Mimieux.
This is a beautiful story about a woman with the mentality abilities of a ten-year-old. She still has a zest for life that other jaded afults no longer possess. She falls in love with a man that seems to love her too. What I feel gets lost in the story is the fact that since she is more of a child with innocence, and she really doesn’t grow up, what will become of her when married and facing adult issues? Granted, the mother does think of this, but really that doesn’t make it not happen. I wonder what would come of the relationship later in life. It’s also a wonderment that nobody questions the mentality of Clara, the debutante. This is a sweet story, and in the end, everyone gets what they want. Havilland is beautiful in her portrayal of the mother that can’t see her daughter as more than a ten-year-old. Mimieux portrays the young woman that doesn’t see more than what’s in front of her. The story, although not deep, is still a wonderful warm holiday feature. It’s worth the watch.
