Haywire (2011) Rated R

A black ops soldier seeks revenge when she was betrayed during a mission. Starring Gina Carano, Michael Angarano, and Channing Tatum.

This script is not the best. There are some inconsistencies in the storyline. Although, it has good action and Gina Carano is brilliant as the soldier bent on revenge. The film does have a jumble of A-list actors behind Carano, but she is the one that stands out. Not many films have a good female lead that can be soft as well as hard when needed, and she is it. The film has a gritty style that brings authenticity to the story. It’s more style than substance, but the substance is there. I was wonderfully entertained. It’s worth the watch.

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) Rated R

After he returns to the criminal world, John Wick learns there is a bounty on his head. Starring Keanu Reeves, Riccardo Scamarcio, and Ian McShane.

The John Wick series tends to have over-the-top action. Although, he seems to be indestructible. It is a series to suspend your disbelief. What also makes this series great is the story that follows John Wick is interesting and compelling enough. Then you have the great cinemagraphy that highlights the scenes to brilliance. You also have Reeves playing a character he’s honed over the years. I am always surprised by these films as the moral and code of ethics are wonderfully expressed. You know what you have in these films. This one continues the story of John Wick as he tries to leave that world behind. This is film is worth the watch.

Hardball (2001) Rated PG

A gambling addict agrees to coach a little league team in order to get a loan. Starring Keanu Reeves, Diane Lane, and John Hawkes.

This film isn’t one of the best. It has heart but lacks consistancy of the script. The film changes from a man who lives a tough life to one that is redeemable. That’s also what makes this film enjoyable to watch. It’s a great film for preteens or teens and presents the reality of yourh living in the inner city. It does a great job at weaving the realities of life with the redeemable characters. Everyone is doing the best that they can. Of course, it shows more adult behavior in the children, but it is truthful in the respect that these are inner city kids that grow up faster than their suburban counterparts. This film is worth the watch.

Jack (1996) Rated PG-13

Due to a disorder, Jack ages four times faster than everyone else. He starts public school as a fifth grader that looks like he’s 40. Starring Robin Williams, Diane Lane, and Brian Kerwin.

This film has heart and it tries to do right. While Robin is his usual best self in the character of a boy who is in the body of a man, I did feel that this film bit off more than it could chew. The film tends to drag in length. It has the presense of Big, but this revolves around a disorder, so you have to be careful with the jokes. They do a fairly good job at that. It helps that he has a talent with his size in basketball. The film, overall, does a wonderful job at holding to the sentimental aspect of a boy living in a man’s body. It doesn’t, on the other hand, make the film a masterpiece, thus it is not worth the watch.

Ice Dreams (2009) Rated TV-PG

Years after a tragic accident, a former figure skater takes on a coaching job that brings on the healing and demons from the past. Starring Jessica Cauffiel, Shelley Long, and Brady Smith.

This is one of the worst films from Hallmark. The script is rushed; it doesn’t flow nicely. Then you have the characters responding to scenarios in an unnatural way. While Jessica Cauffiel tries to make the script work, she tends to overact. You also have the typical annoyance of music playing over the dialogue. It’s disruptive. This is not one of Hallmark’s best, making it not worth the watch.

Garage Sale Mystery: Guilty Until Proven Innocent (2016) Rated TV-G

Antiques guru Jennifer Shannon investigates a murder in which her best friend from High School is the prime suspect. Starring Lori Loughlin, Sarah Strange, and Steve Bacic.

The Garage Sale Mysteries are on a run. The acting and the writing are better with each film. This one has great family chemistry with the wonderment of how Jennifer always find herself involved in the murders. She finds them more than the cops. It’s an inside joke. The writing isn’t bad. The mystery isn’t much of a mystery, but none of these are. I did find it interesting that her teenaged son seems to be involved in grade hacking in his High School. Granted, he’s trying to be the better man. This film is still worth the watch.

Gandhi (1982) Rated PG

The film chronicles the life of an Indian lawyer turned activist. Starring Ben Kingsley, Rohini Hattangadi, and Roshan Seth.

The performance of Kingsley as Gandhi is excellent. There are a number of things I dislike about the film that aren’t film related. One, the film makes Gandhi out to be someone trying to become a famous public figure. Granted, he wanted to make a point, but I feel he was doing it more for the notoriety and was insincere. Everything he did was making a point. All throughout the film we have Ghandi quoting the Bible, though he never accepts the gift God gave. At the end of the film, it’s sad that he believes only God can make the decision to send someone to Hell, yet he doesn’t accept Christ as the Messiah. At least, we don’t know if he did or not, but it’s sad to think that he believes in works, not faith. It’s even sadder to think he could be in Hell for all that he did. 🙁 It’s a good film documenting a life that was interesting, making the movie worth a watch.
