Nightcrawler (2014) Rated R

A con man is desperate for work and stumbles into crime journalism where observer and participant blur together. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Papajohn, and Marco Rodríguez.

This film has the potential to be great. It pulls you into the story of a detached loner who has figured out that he’s smart enough to do criminal journalism with a camera and a police scanner. Gyllenhaal is brilliant in his portrayal of the loner as he learns the business and starts committing crimes in order to film them for money. The question is how far will he go, and how far will the news stations allow him to go? His character is a borderline psychopath, and you really hope he will get caught or at least his comeuppance. A lot of what he does is illegal, and it’s annoying to watch him talk himself free. The only positive is Gyllenhaal’s performance. The story needs work. It’s not worth the watch.
