Shanghai (2010) Rated R

In the early 1940s, an American expat goes to Shanghai to investigate the death of his friend. Starring John Cusack, Gong Li, and Chow Yun-Fat.

As it is shot like a noir film, the cinematography is beautiful, but it lacks the classic film noir themes. The production value looks stunning at first, but then you can see the tarnish. The film has its usual twist and turns but nothing that stands out. The story has some points that pull you in, but overall, the story is too confusing. It struggles to keep up with the level of thrills that a noir should have. Then again, the twists aren’t shocking. The characters just don’t have the depth needed to make you care about who is good and who is bad. This film is not worth the watch.
