Deadly Voltage (2016) Rated UR

when the sky falls 2015A fractured family gets caught in an electrical storm. Starring Alaina Huffman, Krista Bridges, Daniel Magder.

Yes, it’s dangerous and scary to get caught out in an electrical storm, but to try to center a whole film around that premise is pretty lame.  Basically, a family tries to reconnect on a hiking trip, only to get attacked by a lightning storm.  If you are going to make natural disaster the big villain, you need big special effects, and this film did not deliver.  You also have to suspend rational judgment and scientific knowledge to make this movie plausible.  There was absolutely nothing terrifying about this movie, except for the money spent to make it.  This movie is a pass.

The March Sisters at Christmas (2012) Rated TV-14

March sisters at christmasThe March sisters are trying to stop their family home being sold, but their romantic entanglements are getting in the way. Starring Julie Berman, Kaitlin Doubleday, Melissa Farman.

I have never been a fan of Little WomenI confess, I have never read the book, but I’ve also never seen a film adaptation that appealed to me.  My disinterest is mainly due to the romantic entanglements that the March sisters find themselves in.  So, it can be expected that this movie- a modern adaptation of the same entanglements- would not cause my heart to pitter-patter either.  I will say that, other than using the same names and characters, there is not much to compare this to the original version of the story.  It is cute, but pointless.  Another pass on the March sisters for me.

Bully (2001) Rated R

bullyA group of teenagers conspire to murder a friend whose emotional, physical and sexual bullying has become too much. Based on the 1993 murder of Bobby Kent. Starring Brad Renfro, Bijou Phillips, Rachel Miner, Nick Stahl, Michael Pitt.

This gritty tale had my head spinning, literally.  Both sordid and surreal, the movie plunges us into the underbelly of American life.  One scene in particular made me physically ill, just from the motion of the camera, as it circled around a group of friends as they discussed the plans for the murder.  Faster and faster the film spun around, until I could no longer focus my eyes on the screen. The murder itself was disturbingly realistic.  With all of the sex and nudity involved, I really feel this should have received an X rating.  I cannot recommend this movie; it is a pass.

Where Hope Grows (2014) Rated PG-13

Where hope grows

A baseball player, whose life is on the outs, meets a young grocery store stocker with Down syndrome and his life is reawaken. Starring Kristoffer Polaha, David DeSanctis, McKaley Miller, Danica McKellar, Brooke Burns, Kerr Smith

This film tried to be warm-hearted and I really wanted to like this film. At times I did. Other times I felt the film didn’t want to be over powering  in what I would say the preaching of the story. They (the filmmakers) wanted to tell a story but what story did they want to tell. It wasn’t very strong. It was like a lukewarm story with not much meat. It’s a great story I just wish it was better executed. Take the climax of story, it was over dramatized, we all knew what was going to happen and who was there. There was no need to do the dun dun dun. It’s still worth a watch.

Red Dog (2011) Rated PG

Red dogBased on the legendary true story of the Red Dog, who united a community while searching for his long-lost master. Based on the book, Red Dog by Louis de Bernieres. Starring Josh Lucas, Rachael Taylor, Rohan Nichol, Koko, Keisha Castle-Hughes.

I love this heartrending film about a dog who gives hope to others while searching for his owner, whom he loves.  It’s a story about life and death and loyalty.  Keep tissues handy; you’ll be tearing up from the beginning to the end of this one. This film is so worth a watch.

Wynonna Earp (SYFY) Rated TV-14

Wynonna earpBased on the IDW Comic. Wynonna Earp is the great granddaughter of Wyatt Earp, who battles demons and other creatures. Starring Melanie Scrofano, Shamier Anderson, Tim Rozon.

This is one of the worst shows on TV. The concept sounded interesting, but it failed to deliver.  Mainly, I found myself lost and confused as to the point of the show.  There is little explanation for any of Wynonna’s actions. Why is it difficult for her to go home?  Was she forced to leave or does she not want to be there?  What is the curse?  Why is she fighting these criminals?  The show is poorly written and produced.  It is definitely a pass for me.
