An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (1991) Rated G

Fievel’s family decides to go west, thinking it’s safer from the city cats. Starring Phillip Glasser, James Stewart, and Erica Yohn.

When I first watched this film years ago, I remember not being impressed and wasn’t sure if the original film needed a sequel. Alas, money talks, so we have a sequel to the adventure of Moskowitz family. Let’s have them continue to go west. Surprisingly, everyone is on board, including Tiger the cat. I’m going to give some spoilers for the this film. First, the family, again, loses Fievel; it’s like Home Alone but animated. I mean, how often you do lose your son while still not believing a word he says? The animation itself doesn’t hold up over time, which is sad since the film is still a treasure. The only thing that I really enjoy about the film is the character of Wylie, who is voiced by James Stewart. That whole character just warms my heart. Wylie not only comes to life with Stewart’s voice but his storyline is the only one that makes the film make any sense. Fievel’s character has both the joy and frustration in his imagination; it’s what makes the film. Although, it’s not enough to make it worth the watch.
