Over the years, her moderate self-esteem and high – although not unrealistic – standards have been consistently crippled by the hyper-sexual, superficial, ethically challenged millennial dating culture. She has just about accepted defeat. When the story starts, Mahogany, who’s been suffering through a months-long sexual frustration, is on yet another disastrous date. Things go from bad to worse and by the night’s end, she draws the conclusion that “hoes are winning” and contemplates becoming one. Though her love life is a “complete shit show,” Mahogany still holds committed relationships in high regard and finds hope in her roommate and best friend Shyra – a rare product of a two-parent household raised on a steady diet of romantic comedies, Catholic school, and Good Housekeeping – who’s long-term relationship with Rodney is picture-perfect – or so it seems. Guided by a strong moral code, Mahogany has always managed to walk a straight and narrow line, despite habitual ridicule and questionable advice from her close friends Misha and Reign. But when Rodney’s side chick surfaces and Shyra is left devastated, Mahogany loses all hope and the scale is finally tipped. To Misha and Reign’s delight, Mahogany finally joins the dark side. Ironically, now that Mahogany has abandoned her high standards and expectations for love in favor of spontaneous, casual sex, she finally found the perfect guy, Kaleb. The sex is hot, the chemistry is crazy, and the emotions are so high that a one-night stand quickly turns into an ideal “situationship” – except for the fact that Kaleb has a girlfriend. But by the time she finds out, Mahogany is in too deep. High on lust and drowning in ecstasy, the line between right and wrong becomes so blurry that Mahogany can barely recognize herself – let alone the hypocrisy of her position as the girl on the side. Brian’s Song (1971) Rated G

Based on the true story of the friendship between teammates Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers, Chicago Bears Receivers. Based on the book, I Am Third by Gale Sayers. Starring James Caan, Billy Dee Williams, and Jack Warden.

This was filmed months after Piccolo’s desth from cancer. It’s heartwarming and brings to life the real relationship between the teammates. Caan and Williams do a wonderful job at bringing the friendship to life. It’s also a wonderful tribute to Piccolo, whose life was so short. The film includes the actual teammates that played with Piccolo and Sayers as well as real footage of the games. While the film itself isn’t the best and has the air of rush to print, its warmth and love of Piccolo makes it worth the watch.

The F Word (FOX) Rated TV-MA

Chef Gordon Ramsay judges families across America as they compete against each other in a cook off. Starring Gordon Ramsay, Jaimie Alexander, and Gina Dunlap.

This is a different show for Gordon, granted he’s done the British show for a number of years. I just struggle with the format of this show. It doesn’t flow nicely. It doesn’t help that the pacing tries to be fast when it isn’t. Let the action flow at the pace it wants to. Then you get the mix of celebrity interviews with Gordon showcasing his brilliancy in the kitchen. The families don’t help as they are uninteresting. This series is not worth the watch.

Broadcast News (1987) Rated R

Two rival broadcasters fight over their jobs and vie for the heart of their producer. Starring William Hurt, Albert Brooks, and Holly Hunter.

The newsroom is the backdrop for this rom-com that is as unrealistic as they come. For one thing, the character of Holly Hunter is so unlikable; she reminds me of myself. She wants love but is unwilling to give into love. The script is brilliant as the characters banter back and forth fighting for the promotion and the affection of a woman who struggles with giving herself. Overall, the film is brilliantly done. I have nothing bad to say about it. Although, there are things I disliked. I hated the high moral stand that Hunter’s character took; I don’t agree with it, even if I myself have a high moral ground. I also hated her character as she got into the taxi for the last time. Choosing the wrong moral ground just made me think she is the stupidest girl. This film isn’t worth the watch.

Brad Paisley’s Shark Country (Discovery) Rated NR

Country star Brad Paisley is joined by J.B. Smoove in the Bahamas to see what sounds attract the sharks. Starring Brad Paisley and J.B. Smoove.

The show has its gimmick to get you to tune in and observe the reactions of the sharks, and while it’s good TV and you get to enjoy the music of Brad Paisley, it is more for entertainment than science. JB is there for the laughs, and Brad’s there for the entertainment; they make an interesting team. Although, I think JB got on Brad’s nerves here and there, which was more hilarious than JB’s jokes most of the time. The show might have been better if they only had one of the hosts, but it’s still entertaining, making it worth the watch.

Anna Karenina (1935) Rated NR

The married Anna Karenina falls in love with Count Vronsky despite her husband’s refusal of a divorce. Starring Greta Garbo, Fredric March, and Freddie Bartholomew.

I was rather disappointed with this depiction of Anna Karenina. It’s supposed to be a great love story, alas I didn’t feel the love. The film is a shortened version of the book, so the pacing is a little fast. Garbo is wonderful as Karenina, but March leaves his character lacking. I did wonder what Karenina saw in him to leave not only her husband but her son. Basil Rathbone as Alexei Karenin is an enigmatic and charismatic man that makes Count Vronsky pale in comparison. The cinematography is beautifully done. I’m surprised that this film is considered highly rated. To me, it’s not worth the watch.
